Morgan Winemaker Sam Smith was captivated by vineyards from a very young age, spending many weekends cycling on California’s Central Coast with his father. Sam attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, studying French, Spanish, and Economics for an intended career in International Business. A semester abroad in Bordeaux changed all that – a tour and tasting at Château Lynch–Bages showed Sam his future direction and passion.
He jumped head first into the wine industry, working harvests in Santa Barbara, Australia, Willamette Valley and the Northern Rhône. Sam’s years as assistant winemaker at Margerum were bookended by experience with Pinot Noir from Oregon and Syrah at Domaine François Villard. Sam’s goal of unmanipulated elegance and balance is a perfect fit with Morgan Winery’s vineyard-centric philosophy and style.
