David Phillips

Co-Owner and President
Michael David Winery

David Phillips is co-owner of Michael David Winery in Lodi, CA. As a 5th generation wine grape grower, David spent his childhood farming the same land that is now home to the winery. At the beginning of his career in the 1980s, David was involved in numerous farmers’ market boards, launching several markets across Northern California.  Shortly after graduating from U.C. Davis in 1987, Dave went on a worldwide tour of wine regions in Europe, South Australia, and New Zealand. He then went to work for an international cork company in San Francisco before returning to help his older brother Michael run the family business in 1989.

With a focus on distributor growth, David spent the 1990s traveling around the country acquiring distributor accounts, attending sales meetings, and building brand awareness of his family’s wines. By 2002, Michael David wines were distributed in all 50 states and David’s focus moved abroad. While he sold Michael David wines across the world, David also used his resources to promote the Lodi wine region. David attributes his proudest accomplishment to encouraging his neighbors and friends in the area to open their own wineries, with over 80 wineries operating in Lodi today.

These days, David and his wife Corene are primary ambassadors for Michael David Winery and travel the world on the winery’s behalf to meet with distributors, retailers, and restaurateurs across the United States and in 32 countries. David served on the planning commission for the City of Lodi, promoting Lodi tourism and preserving farmland in the region. David serves on the board for Wine Institute, the Wine Institute Export Committee, and the Lodi Association of Wineries. As a founding member, David continues to serve on the marketing committee for the Lodi Wine Grape Commission, emphasizing the quality of the Lodi wine region. In addition, David started the Michael David Family Foundation along with his family, collectively donating over one million dollars to the local San Joaquin community. David and Corene have two adult sons, Conner and Joseph, and love spending time in the outdoors together when they can. David is an avid runner, hiker, biker, and skier who takes every opportunity to backcountry ski, trail run, and participate in marathons across the country.
